The Oshkosh Chamber Singers

Concert Season 2010-2011

The Oshkosh Chamber Singers invites you to join us for our 25th season of presenting the finest in choral repertoire.

Carmina Burana
October 30, 2010
Alberta Kimball Auditorium, 1100 West Smith Avenue (West High School), Oshkosh (map & driving directions)

Mark your calendars – The Oshkosh Chamber Singers kick off the celebration of their 25th season with a performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana on Saturday, October 30, 7:30 pm at Alberta Kimball Auditorium. The Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Carl Chapman, will join forces with UW Oshkosh Chamber Choir, UW Oshkosh University Choir, and Le Choeur de Femmes to present this energetic and perhaps most widely-recognized piece of classical music today.

The origin of Carmina Burana began in 1803 when a scroll of medieval poems was discovered in a Bavarian monastery. These poems, written primarily in Latin, were determined to be the work of renegade monks and wandering poets of the 13th century.  In 1935 German composer Carl Orff re-discovered the poems and composed a cantata using the centuries-old verses. He transformed the writings into invocations and profane chants, accompanied by numerous instruments and magical representations. The songs are divided into three sections: Springtime (the life force renewed), In the Tavern (drinking and gambling), and The Court of Love (passion and sensuality). These sections are pervaded and framed by The Wheel of Fortune ("O Fortuna") perpetually turning, perpetually governing the course of human existence.

Singers in the community interested in joining Oshkosh Chamber Singers should contact Dr. Chapman at 424-2272 to arrange for a short audition.

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
December 18, 2010
2 performances: 4:00 pm & 7:30 pm
Trinity Episcopal Church, 311 Division St., Oshkosh (map & driving directions)

Accompanied by pipe organ and brass ensemble, the Oshkosh Chamber Singers give voice to the true spirit of Christmas. Interwoven with music that tells the story of the advent and nativity are brief scripture passages read by members of the community. The audience is invited to lift their voices in the congregational singing of familiar carols.

Weaving together scripture and song, this concert makes a truly magical progression that will carry you from prophecy to fulfillment, from Old Testament foretelling to a birthday celebration.

Make your holidays shine with the concert that has been an Oshkosh tradition for over 17 years. Community members say this annual concert starts the Christmas season in a wonderful way, and they wouldn't miss it!

Come out of the cold and join us for the warmth of songs & stories celebrating the miracles of the season.
